Montessori Toddler Lapbook: My First Lapbook

Assalamu alaikum,

Alhamdulillah, I finished my first lapbook! It's a Montessori inspired Toddler lapbook insha'Allah. It contains things that todders do throughout their day insha'Allah.

This is the cover:

This is the first page and the inside flaps (right and left flaps):

This is a close-up of the first inside page. There are cards for Quran and dua on the left flap. In the middle it says 'Storytime' and the bookcase has three pockets to hold mini-books insha'Allah. You can also see the right flap in this picture. It has an ayah about the five daily prayers, a hadith about them and then a mini-book that names each of the five daily prayers. Kids can colour this mini-book insha'Allah.

This is the next page. It is for learning to set a table correctly (Montessori inspired). Two year olds learn this in Montessori classrooms (or is it younger? I don't remember right now). I will use real child size dishes for this activity insha'Allah.

This page shows a colour matching game. There is a pocket on the bottom of the page to store the different colour masaajid insha'Allah.

This page shows a lift the flap book about fruits:

This is the last page and it is also Montessori inspired. The child matches the geometric shape to the outline. There is a window in the midle of the page so the shapes can be changed insha'Allah. The pieces for this activity are stored in a pocket on the back of the lapbook insha'Allah (not pictured).

This lapbook took me about a week to complete because I kept changing my mind about what I wanted to put in it (hehe)...so many possibilities! I wanted this lapbook to be something the kids can work on pretty much independently insha'Allah. I was also thinking 'travel companion' for kids too insha'Allah.

Insha'Allah, I'll update this post and add the Arabic Quran and Dua files but here is the 'Five Daily Prayers' Minibook in English and this is the 'Five Daily Prayers Minibook in Arabic insha'Allah. Unfortunately, the Arabic files are giving me trouble when I try to PDF them and even in MS Word they're doing funny things.

Also, jazakillahu Khayr dear sister Umm Abdul Basir for teaching me how to add extensions to a lapbook (her pictures where the only things that helped me figure it out. I couldn't find any tutorial on the web that shows how to do that subhana'Allah).

But alhamdulillah the lapbook is done. I think these will be very useful to have in learning centres insha'Allah. I don't know what we'll do next but we'll see insha'Allah.

*Update* : Here are the graphics I used for the lapbook insha'Allah: Lapbook Grapics and here is the Masjid Colour Matching Game insha'Allah.

*Update II*: Here are the Quran cards and Athkar cards for the lapbook alhamdulillah.

Enjoy insha'Allah!

Masha Allaah this looks so cute. I am very much new for this lapbook business lol. I have never done this but would love to do it. I am very happy that you are focusing more on the good stuff of the Montessori method as I am familiar with this too masha Allaah.

One thing that bothers me is that will a two year old try to remove things that are on it if you are not supervising them? My daughter loves exploring and very rarely she does such a thing. But she can get into a mood and do things sneakily and you will find some papers torn lol. Just want to know how did you all manage insha Allaah.

Masha Allaah happy to know that you like the name Maimoonah, so do we lol. And am sure if you ever meet her now you will fall in love with her at your first meeting lol masha Allaah.

    Barakallaah Feeki

  5. Waalaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Umm Maimoonah, jazakillahu khary dear sis. This is also my first introduction to lapbooking. I'd seen it around the web but was not too interested but now!...lol...well...it's so much fun subhana'Allah. I suggest you give it a try insha'Allah. And for Montessori, yes, I have a strong appreciation for that method of educating children alhamdulillah. I will try to post more Montessori activities insha'Allah in the near future.

For two year olds and paper. Yes, this can be an issue, however, the parts in the lapbook that I thought may be tempting, I either laminated or used the pages for photo albums and put the actvitity in that and then glued that into the lapbook. If you model how to handle books using the presentation method suggested by Montessori, I think you will find that this will decrease (if not cease) insha'Allah. This is one of the reasons I like Montessori, it really does not underestimate what a child is capable of masha'Allah.

I do not doubt that if I met your daughter I would certainly love her insha'Allah. Please pass her my salam and yes her name is very beautiful masha'Allah - this, I'm guessing is part of why you chose it yes? (smile)

Stay in touch dear sister and wa feki barak Allah.

    Jazakillahu Khayr
