A List of Islaamic Goals for children 3 - 5 years old

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

There is one question that many parents have and that I have been asked a few times. Over the past few months several people have asked about an Islaamic curricula for children 3 to 5 years old. While I am not aware of the existence of one and am not qualified to write one, I thought this list of goals for 3  -5 year olds might be helpful for parents (some of you that requested this have already received the document via email).

They are goals only and there is no research that says every 3 -5 year old must master them. They are only suggestions and it must be kept in mind that each child develops differently and at different rates. As an example: one child's capacity to memorize may be vastly different from another child who is the same age. In most cases there is no need for concern insha'Allaah. We must take care to provide the child with the amount of material he/she is capable of handling at that particular stage in his/her development.

Also bear in mind that the list is not exhaustive; there are many things you may wish to add to the list based on your knowledge of your child. Conversely, there are things on the list you may wish to skip over until your child is ready for that task. The goals are also in no particular order so do not feel obligated to follow the goals in the order that they are presented.

There is also a column that offers suggestions of things that may help children achieve these goals - they mostly focus on the parent(s) actively and consistently modeling certain behaviours, reading ad'yiah, etc. More than anything, the parent(s)/teacher must focus on teaching Tawheed and what negates/nullifies it. Lastly, these are only suggestions to help parents/educators decide what goals they may wish to set for their child(ren)/students.

One last lastly. It is vital that parent(s)/caregivers exert their best effort to locate the authentic ad'iyah (pl. of dua') and ahadith (pl. hadith) to teach to their children. I've attempted to place all of the ad'iyah and ahadith mentioned on this list here for easy reference (most of the ad'iyah are under the label Hisn-ul-Muslim). With all of that said, click on the picture below to download the list insha'Allaah.

May Allaah accept your efforts and work!

  1. asSalaamu 3laykum,

Thank you soooooooooo much for putting this together!!!! Jazaaki Allahu khayr!!! It's *so* clear and helpful! As a convert, I'm always worried that I'm not teaching my children what they need to know, and am never sure whether my expectations are too high or too low. I really can't thank you enough.

One for 6+? Sis, to be very honest, I am not sure how soon I could get to that. But remind me about it insha'Allaah, and I will do my best to do it. I get behind in work so I may forget(read that as: most likely will unintentionally forget *smile*). But please do remind me insha'Allaah.

      Jazakillaahu khayr!
