Three Green Books, Three Wonderful Stories

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Summertime is a great opportunity for teachers and parents to begin building or adding to an already existing library for their classroom or home (or both!). This summer, you may wish to browse the aisles of your local library and check out three green books. Each book is full of eye-catching illustrations (or photographs) and within the pages of each book there awaits a story or poem that young children may sincerely enjoy insha'Allaah.

A Leaf Can Be . . .
by Laura Purdie Salas

This book takes children on an adventure to discover what role leaves play in our environment throughout the year. The illustrations glow and captivate the eye. Some of the text may require some explanation as children may not be familiar with such words as "welt" or "concealer" but the story is enjoyable none the less.

'Green' is an artful exploration of the many shades of the colour green. As they turn each page, children may find considerable enjoyment in the die-cut pages that reveal just how many shades of green there are. This author is noted for her ability to create engaging books with vivid colours but please be aware that some of her books are not suitable for Muslim children. In particular "First the Egg" is Islamically inappropriate.

Detailed photographs show the natural world and some of Allaah's tinniest creation. Alhamdulillaah many of the photographs are taken from behind the insects and butterflies so that you do not see the facial features. The poem that accompanies these photos is gentle and it encourages the reader to be an inquisitive, alert observer of the world they live in. It is a poem that lends itself to being read aloud again and again. If you plan to do a unit on insects next year or you find that the summer break presents a wonderful time to explore the environment with your littlest ones, this book may be a delightful prelude to the journey.

Enjoy insha'Allaah!
