Quran Centre Word Work: Surah Quraysh

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Alhamdulillaah, here is the workbook for surah Quraysh.

Like the workbook for surah al-Ikhlas, the format of this workbook is slightly different from the others. Like the other workbooks, there is no language/text in the book aside from the ayaat. This is intentional because it allows for flexibility in shaa' Allaah. There are, however, visual instructions to help the students complete the workbook with little assistance (or, as originally intended, in a Quran centre in the classroom/home-school classroom).

Like before, in this workbook, on each page, students will find a picture of a highlighter which tells them that they have to find the word they see in the circle, in the ayah at the top of the page. When students see the picture of the pencil, they know they have to write the word presented or circle the correct answer. For instance, on one page, the students see two words from the surah and they must circle the beginning sound/letter for each word. The picture of the magnifying glass alerts students to the fact that they have to search for the word in the circle, in addition to highlighting it in the ayah.

However, in this book, students will encounter two new icons: a picture of the diacritical marks and a picture of a crayon. The picture of the diacritical marks tells students that they have to put the tashkeel on the word in the box. The picture of the crayon tells students that they have to colour all of the letters found in the word that they highlighted in the ayah (i.e. the word that was in the circle). The picture of the book tells students that they have to re-assemble the surah in the correct order (the ayaat strips are located on the last page of the workbook).

There is one page of the workbook where students have to fill in the missing word in the ayah in two different ways.

On this page (pictured above), students will write the missing word from the ayah (indicated by the picture of the pencil), and they will colour the box that shows the missing word (indicated by the question mark).

In shaa' Allaah, the remaining activities in the book are self-explanatory, but if not, please do not hesitate to leave a comment and ask for clarification.

You can download the workbook here or above in shaa' Allaah.

Quran Centre Word Work: Surah Al-Ikhlas

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

After receiving a comment regarding difficulty downloading files from the Quran Centre Word Work posts, I realized that the workbook for suratul Al-Ikhlas was nowhere to be found (on the blog). There are activities for this surah in this post, but there isn't a workbook.

Alhamdulillaah, here is the word work book for suratul Ikhlas

The format of this workbook is slightly different from the others. Like the other workbooks, there is no language/text in the book aside from the ayaat. This is intentional because it allows for flexibility in shaa' Allaah. There are, however, visual instructions to help the students complete the workbook with little assistance (or, as originally intended, in a Quran centre in the [home-shcool] classroom).

In this workbook, on each page, students will find a picture of a highlighter which tells them that they have to find the word they see in the circle, in the ayah at the top of the page. The building blocks tell students that they have to build the word using the letter cut outs on the last page of the workbook. The picture of the book tells students that they have to re-assemble the surah in the correct order (the ayaat strips are also located on the last page of the workbook).

There is one page of the workbook that, aside from the highlighter icon/picture, has no instructions. This too is intentional. After finding and highlighting the word in the circle on the left hand side of the page (#1 in the picture below), students are supposed to find the letters that make up that word (# 2 in the picture below). You can have students colour the letters or you can use the circle stickers from the Dollar Store (or a store that sells stationary supplies); simply write the Arabic alphabet on them and have students place stickers on the correct answer (# 2 in the picture below). Or you can have students provide the correct answer in another way that you choose.

In shaa' Allaah, the remaining activities in the book are self-explanatory, but if not, please do not hesitate to leave a comment and ask for clarification.

You can download the workbook here or above in shaa' Allaah. Also, to date, the following suwar have workbooks:

  1. Al-Fatihah
  2. An-Nas
  3. An-Nasr
  4. Al-Kawthar
  5. Al-Kafiroon
  6. Al-Masad
  7. Al-Falaq
  8. Al-Ma’un
  9. Al-Ikhlas

Arabic Letters Handwriting Workbook

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

*Post Updated!*

Also in Dutch! Download below insha'Allaah!

Now in French! Download the file below insha'Allaah!

This Arabic letters handwriting workbook provides children with the opportunity to shape each letter with play-doh, recognize each letter as it appears in isolation, in the middle of a word and at the end of a word. Children also practice writing each letter in each of the three above-mentioned forms. When done, children are given the opportunity to locate and identify each letter in actual words, helping to support letter recognition insha'Allaah.

The book is meant to be (but you don't have to) printed on card stock, laminated and bound so that students can use a dry-erase marker to use the workbook repeatedly for handwriting and letter formation practice (with play-doh) insha'Allaah. To keep cost down you can print the workbook on card stock and instead of laminating each page, use clear shelf liner, and then bind it.

Click on the picture for a close up view insha'Allaah
This book has a vinyl cover on both the front and back, is spiral bound, and has clear shelf liner only on the bottom half of the page where students will do their work.

To use the book in your Quraan or writing centres you can print, laminate, and bind two or three copies, provide a basket with three different colours of play-doh and put three black dry-erase markers in a cup. To avoid disagreements about who will use which colour play-doh you can buy the round dot stickers from your local dollar store and place a dot sticker that corresponds to the colour of play-doh for each book on the top right hand corner of the book cover. When students have their time at that centre the teacher can have a laminated sheet (this way you can use a dry erase marker to change the students names as needed insha'Allaah) at the centre (tapped to the table or hung on the wall at the students' eye level) that has the same colour dot and next to it a space for the student's name who will use that colour that day. Students simply look at the chart, find their name and see which colour dot is next to their name and they know which book and which colour play-doh they will use that day. So on Monday, for example, next to the red dot on the sheet is Abul Aziz's name. He will use the handwriting book with the red dot on its cover and the red play- doh to do his work insha'Allaah.

The workbook is not intended to replace direct instruction but is intended to support it. The workbook can be used to allow children extra practice or to assign homework for additional practice insha'Allaah. There are no graphics that will distract the child from the goal of producing precise formation of the letters and attending to the text.

Enjoy insha'Allaah!

Quraan Centre Word Work: Surah Al-Kafiroon Activities & Workbook

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Alhamdulillaah, this is the word work for surah Al-Kafiroon.

In the workbook for surah Al-Kafiroon, children are introduced to begin identifying letters as they are represented in the beginning, middle and end of a word.  In the word work packet there is a word hunt, a movable Arabic alphabet activity that has two flashcards with words children are invited to spell using the movable alphabet, Arabic handwriting practice and more alhamdulillaah!

Insha'Allaah, your students/children benefit and enjoy this. Before downloading this file, please take a moment to read the terms of use for this and all resources on A Muslim Child is born (if you haven't alerady). Jazakum Allaahu Khayr. The file is available for download above or here insha'allaah.

Introduction to Tashkeel Game

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This file folder game is used along side an audio program for children that introduces at-tashkeel but can be used independently as well (i.e. teacher/parent-teacher speaking).

How it works: Three blank white squares are glued/placed as shown above or in a manner you feel is best (i.e. you put the dhumma between the fatha and kesra). The cards showing فتحة (fatha),كسرة   (kesra) and ضمّة dhumma are glued/placed in their proper positions. The alphabet cards are stored in the envelope below. Depending on which letter is being studied, the teacher/parent-teacher may choose to place only that letter in the envelope.

The teacher/parent-teacher prepares the audio program (i.e. CD recording, computer program, etc.) for the child(ren). When the child hears the letter with a particular tashkeel, he/she places the letter on the correct white box below or above the correct tashkeel. An example:

The letter being studied is: ن

Audio Recording or Teacher/Parent-Teacher: "Noon kesra nee".

The child moves the noon letter card to the correct square.

The child goes through the sequence placing the letter in the correct box for each harakaat/tashkeel, repeating as often as needed until it is mastered. This mastery may take a few or several sessions, depending on the child.

Because this is introductory, each letter is represented once only (i.e. there are not three cards for each letter. There is one letter noon and the child physically moves the letter around as needed). To help the child focus on the tashkeel and how it affects the letter, they move the one card and are not distracted with seeing one letter two or three times. This also helps the child focus on correctly identifying which harakaat they need to produce the sound they have just heard. If, for example, there are already two cards showing the letter noon on the fatha and the dumma spaces and the teacher says, "Noon kesra nee", the child sees only one box available and will automatically put it there. This may not give the teacher an accurate picture of the child's level of mastery of this particular task. Having three empty boxes at all times allows the child to take time to think about which box they need to place the letter in to represent the sound they have just heard.

Insha'Allaah, your students/children benefit and enjoy this. Before downloading this file, please take a moment to read the terms of use for this and all resources on A Muslim Child is born. Jazakum Allaahu Khayr.  The file is available for download here insha'allaah.

Enjoy insha'Allaah!

Quraan Centre Word Work: Surah An-Nasr Activities & Workbook

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Alhamdulillaah, this is the word work for Surah An-Nasr:

In this word work packet students have the workbook that they have become accustomed to. They also have word cards that the teacher/parent-teacher cuts in two and the students must rematch the cards to make the correct words from the Surah. There is also a flip book that is easy to assemble and comes with word cards with words from the surah and also blank word cards for teachers/parent-teachers to add more words later. With the flip book, the cards can be placed inside the book using Velcro or easy to remove tape to allow the cards to be changed easily. Students can play several games with the flip book to help them learn the words from the surah insha'allaah. There are tracing worksheets for students to practice their handwriting and more!

Download the book here insha'Allaah.

Quraan Centre Word Work: Surah Al-Masad Activities & Workbook

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Alhamdulillaah, this is this Quraan centre word work for surah Al-Masad:

In the word work for this centre, along with the shadow matching of words and the workbook, students embark on early map reading skills with another word hunt! This time, using a simple map, students explore the room looking for certain words from the surah. They are helped by pictures representing centres in the classroom (I've tried to pick centres that can also be places in the home). Students also enjoy a game of completing their ayah before their classmate. Each student gets a game board and the cards are placed face down (shuffled) between the two students. Students take turns picking a card. They must read the card accurately and if they need that card on their board they keep it and put it in its correct place. If they need the card but read it incorrectly after three tries or they cannot read it, they return the card to the bottom of the pile and the next player takes his/her turn. If they do not need the card they simply return it to the bottom of the stack. The game ends when a player accurately complete his/her board.

Students also work with the word building cards mentioned in this post. The teacher/parent-teacher cuts the cards in half, shuffles them and the students work to accurately match the cards to spell some of the words from the surah. Again, Control of Error is built into this particular exercise in the following way: when cut in half, the cards can only be reassembled with their correct match. If the student mismatches two of the cards, the rectangle they form will not be symmetrical/even. It will be either too long or too short. This helps students reconsider the two cards they have placed together and try again insha'Allaah.

Students have an opportunity to work on their handwriting with a tracing worksheet. In another worksheet, they match the words in the right column to the correct word in the left hand column. This worksheet is familiar as students have worked with this in previous suwar word work.  There is the word wheel for this surah and students also have the surah written in large print for independent reading. For this activity (the surah in large print), students use their pointers - made from Popsicle sticks with a small/medium decoration at the tip - to read the surah. Using their Popsicle stick pointer, students point to each word as they read it.

Pointers for independent reading or "Read The Room" activities

There are also selected words from the surah in large red print. These can be placed in your classroom pocket chart in the Quraan centre or used in other activities insha'Allaah.

Quraan Centre Word Work: Surah Al-Fatihah Activities and Workbook

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This is the word work for Surah al-Fatihah:

The word work for this surah is brief. Children work with the student workbook as in the other word work files, they have a word wheel as in this post, and they have movable Arabic alphabet cards for one of the words in the surah. Students cut out the letters and move them around until they correctly spell the word. They also have the word matching worksheet as in other word work files. There is also a mini-memory game for children to take home/use at home. There are four memory cards that are blank so teachers/parent-teachers can write in words that their students/children may need extra practice with.

There are also four word cards that teachers/parent-teachers cut in half and invite students to reassemble the words correctly. Control of Error is built into this particular exercise in the following way: when cut in half, the cards can only be reassembled with their correct match. If the student mismatches two of the cards, the rectangle they form will not be symmetrical/even. It will be either too long or too short. This helps students reconsider the two cards they have placed together and try again insha'Allaah.

Quraan Centre Word Work: Surah Al-Falaq Activities & Workbook

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This is the Quraan centre word work for Surah Al-Falaq:

Pictured (from right to left): Quraan word wheel, Quraan word sorting activity.
Bottom row (right to left): Word Hunt, word matching worksheet and Surah Al-Falaq workbook with sample page).

To give students a bit of variety, word work centres have some variation. The activities for Surah al-Falaq, while slightly different from past Quraan word work centres, are those that students have worked with in the past or are familiar with.

The word work for this surah includes:

* A word hunt: students are given a clipboard, a glue stick, and the clipboard worksheet pictured. The words on the clipboard are hidden around the Quraan centre, classroom or home and during their time at the centre, students quietly search the room for the words. As they find each word, they take the word card from the spot they found it and glue it in the right place on the worksheet. For older students, you can tape the word cards around the room and students can take the words as they find them and tape them to the worksheet in the correct spot.

In the file, you will find the words for the word hunt in large red print and also on smaller cards in black ink. The smaller cards are for the word hunt. You will make more than one copy so you can hide each word 3 (or more) times so that each student has the chance to complete their worksheet insha'Allaah. There are also two different clipboard worksheets, each with different words for students to find. When done, students write their name on their worksheet and place it in the basket for completed work. The large red word cards can be used as flashcards or for other games/activities.

* A word race: The word wheel above on the right with the orange centre is a word race. There are two (or more) copies of this wheel at the Quraan centre (depending on how large your groups are for centre work). The words on the wheel are on clothes pins like in this post. Make sure there are enough clothes pin words so that each student can complete the word wheel. To play, each student/child takes a word wheel and a set of words on clothes pins and places them on their right. Students race to see who can complete the word wheel first. You can also make this an individual activity by having students race themselves using an egg timer (pictured on the right).

* Sorting exercise: Students/children take a mat. There are word cards in the file so that the parent/teacher can decide which words they wish the students to sort. The parent/teacher puts the two words in the two boxes above the circles. Parent/teacher then gives the child the circular words cards (mixed up) and invites the child to sort them by putting the words in the correct circle (as shown above). The file also contains blank circle word cards and blank square word cards, allowing teachers/parents to add words from the surah that may not be in the file.

* Shadow matching words: you can see an example of how this activity is done here

* Matching words: students draw a line to match the words on the worksheet

* And the workbook: The workbook is slightly different for this surah. Instead of students seeing a single word from the ayaat in a blue box at the bottom of the page, students see two words. They also have one word in each ayah that is written in green. Students read the ayah, paying attention to the green word, and then from the two words on the bottom, they circle the word that is the same as the word written in green in the ayah. Example pictured above.

Also, the word work for surah Al-Fatiha should be posted soon. The delay is due to the  file being redone.

Enjoy insha'Allaah!

In the House (Things found in the house labeled in Arabic)

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Some families are studying homes and what is found inside of them. As I was going through some files, I came across this and thought perhaps you could use it insha'Allaah.

If you'd like, I can make cards or a memory game to go along with this poster insha'Allaah. Please leave a comment if you would like for me to do that insha'Allaah. If you would like tashkeel on the cards please also mention that too insha'Allaah.

Alphabet Wrist-Bands

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This Arabic letter activity is a fun way to help reinforce what students have been learning about the letter you have been teaching. This is an alphabet wrist band.

Students are given a strip (printed on cardstock for durability) with the letter of the week and pictures that start with that letter. They are invited to colour their wrist bands and then the teacher/parent uses a hole-puncher to make two holes at each end of the band. With a small piece of yarn, secure the wrist-band to the child's right wrist.

Print and cut out large cards that show the same pictures that are on the wrist band. Hide them around the classroom/your home and invite students to tell you when they happen upon a picture card that matches a picture on their wrist band. When they point out the card, ask them what the picture shows and what letter it begins with. If they are correct, you can choose to place a star sticker on their wrist band (you may wish to ask the child if they want their sticker on the inside of the wristband so the letters and pictures are not obscured).

To add a level of difficulty, include pictures that start with the letter you are studying but are not on the wrist bands but students are familiar with insha'Allaah. See if students can accurately identify that the other pictures they find also start with the letter you are studying. Again, if you wish to give a sticker when the student finds and accurately identifies the picture and its beginning sound, this is at your discretion.

*If your child(ren) are small enough, you can glue the wrist bands onto empty toilet paper rolls and then cut the rolls so that each band is already round. Then just use the hole-punch to make two holes at opposite ends of the band.*

If you wish to use the band and cards for the letter Kaaf, you can download them below insha'Allaah. The file for a class has 7 wrist bands on the page and one set of picture cards. The file for the small group has 3 bands and the picture cards. The words on the picture cards and their pronunciation can be found on the harf (letter) Kaaf postcard.

Arabic Alphabet Memory Games (all letters)

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

In addition to the Kaaf Activity book, I also made a Kaaf memory game for toddlers to play insha'Allaah.

So much fun was had that I decided to make a memory game for each letter of the Arabic alphabet. These games are also a great way to reinforce/re-teach the names of the colours for young toddlers who are just learning this (i.e. the colours). For the game pictured, I just printed the cards and then glued them to the back of a box that had a colourful pattern on it. Each game has 8 cards in the set (each letter in the same colour twice). When introducing memory to toddlers, I usually start with 4 cards and increase them as the child begins to grasp the concept and comfortably plays the game. Here are all of the games to download insha'Allaah:

These can be used along with the Arabic Letter Postcards and Alphabet Activity Books too insha'Allaah.

Enjoy insha'Allaah!
