Hajj Theme Pack (Prek-Kindergarten)

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This theme pack is a small supplementary pack that can be used when teaching preschool and kindergarten children about Hajj. If you have questions about how to use any of the activities please leave a comment insha'Allaah.

Included in the pack are:
  • Hajj Themed Montessori three part cards
  • Word/Picture Matching activities (for the cards: cut them out, mix them up and invite children to match the picture cards with the word card that describes each picture).
  • Hajj Mini Reader
  • Hajj Map Skills Activity
  • Hajj writing prompt (Includes prompt for students at the pre-writing and writing stages)
  • Handwriting practice
  • Graphing Work (use a paper clip and push pin on the spinner. Allow each child to spin the spinner 4 times and note/mark down how many times they land on each picture).
  • Learning the rites of Hajj Activity
  • Visual discrimination activity
  • Hajj Sequencing cards (for self-checking you may wish to write numbers on the back of each card that tells which card is first, second, third, etc. in the sequence so that after completing the activity the child can self-correct if needed).

Last Minute Hajj Story Board/Game

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This is a game I thought up because I can use a story to teach math (subtraction) with it. I once read a picture book that had a cute rhyme so I adapted it to fit this story board:

Put the picture out and set five hujjaj on the board (see below)

Then read the rhyme (see below) and take away a hajji each time you finish the rhyme and then start again until all hujjaj have left the haraam.

Here is the rhyme:

Five Hujjaj went out one day,
Down to the Haraam because they wanted to pray.
The guide soon called for them to come pack,
But only four hujjaj came walking back.

**Continue changing the numbers in red until all hujjaj have left the haraam.**

Then read,

The worried hajj guide went on his way,
down to the haraam where the hujjaj went to pray
He called and called for the hujjaj to come pack
And all five hujjaj came walking back!

Then place all of the hujjaj back on the board if the child(ren) wish to play again insha'Allaah

Mixed-Media Hajj Activity

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

This is a mixed media (is that the new word for collage?) Hajj Activity that children can turn into the front part of a greeting card or a wall picture insha'Allaah.

This was done with foam (the sun), felt (the mountains), corrugated cardboard (the Ka'ba), yarn (the doors in the haraam, construction paper (the sky, the ground and the the background of the haraam and coloured pencils. I tried to photograph this so you can see the dimensions in the collage; the sun, mountains, Ka'aba and doors in the haraam are all raised.

If children make this the same size as a greeting card, you can make a greeting card from posterboard, using a tent fold. Children can then glue this to the front of the greeting card to make a three dimensional Hajj card insha'Allaah. Children can also use clay to make the mountains, sun, etc., and once dry, they can (with adult supervision) glue this onto the scene as well. Many possibilities alhamdulillaah.

This craft is for older children (4 and up) due to the complexity of layering the scene.

Enjoy insha'Allaah!

Suggestions from Umm Adam

Assalamu alaikum,

Umm Adam recently sent me an email with some excellent suggestions to extend the learning for the Cloud Letters Game and the Hajj Game....barak Allahu feha. Here are her suggestions and insha'Allah, you will find them beneficial and fun!

"One extra idea to suggest for your cloud-game is to every time while the cloud is placed at its correct position to stop there and consider together with the child one word that starts with that letter. Like this they [the children] will learn the sounds in practice. In the beginning it can be the adult who helps, but after a short while the child understands the idea and suggests by themselves the words insha'Allah. Like this it will be easy after a while for the child to start reading."

"The new idea for using this material is to focus doing hajj in the correct order. We played this so that we turned all the cards upside down. But not to loose from our sight the cards of Allaah. That is because you never should forget Allaahs position in your life. The child who knows how to read, reads for getting the reading practice. And the child who doesn´t know will be taught to read, for example, one word. One step at the time to figure out what we need to go for looking after. Then we started to turn the cards for finding the correct card in order. It was not allowed to continue the travel forward before all the players had found their required card. Other players are helping each other like we should do in real hajj also. It was so fun and so educational. It was pleasure to answer for the childs´questions of what we are doing at here, and why we do this and what we might feel or see while continuing our hajj etc. "

Jazakillahu Khayr, dear sis Umm Adam!

Hajj Felt Story Board

Assalamu aliakum,

This is a Hajj Felt Story Board File Folder Game (isn't that a long name!) that I made to teach the rites of Hajj insha'Allah. I did this felt story as a file folder game because I really like the versatility of file folders. I didn't realize how much you could do with them until I was introduced to lapbooking alhamdulillah. I keep thinking (when doing these activities), 'this can be put into a back pack and taken along on a trip so easily insha'Allah!'. So I made the story board and I made a pouch/pocket to store all of the felt pieces and well....here it is insha'Allah :

The Ka'aba came out much better this time alhamdulillah!

Safa and Marwa

Muzdalifah (getting stones for the Jamarat)

Mount Arafat

I ran out of blue felt so I have to get some more because when in Mina and for Jamarat, the sky is visable so I want to include that insha'Allah. I also can't (as of this moment) find a template to make a tent. I did the other pieces free-hand (except for the Ka'aba) but I don't want to attempt a tent (too geometrical for me...hehe). I also need to do a Pillar for the Jamarat insha'Allah.

To make this as a file folder game, all I did was take a file folder, cut off the top (lable part) and staple it so it would not open. I then glued the flannel to this and then glued this to the inside of another (new) file folder. For the pocket, all I did was take part of a file folder that I had used for the Hudhayfa lapbook and fold it to make a pouch and glued it onto the other side of the file folder. Easy alhamdulillah! I left the tab that says, "name" visable because I'd like to make more felt story boards this way and when I store them insha'Allah, if I write what the felt story is (i.e. Hajj Rites) on the tab insha'Allah, it will be easy to flip through later to find the one I want insha'Allah.

Now all I need to do is write a brief story or poem to go with the story board insha'Allah. I want to use this this week insha'Allah so I'd better get started writting insha'Allah.

Enjoy insha'Allah!

Pincer Grasp Activity: Clipping clothes pins with felt Ka'abas onto a box

Assalamu alaikum,

Hajj is coming insha'Allah. At first, I told myself that I would not do much here on the blog for Hajj because alhamdulillah, there is a plethora of Hajj activities for children already out there. But then I decided that I do want to do something here for the kids insha'Allah because a lot of what is out there is for children older than the 0-3 age range.

As you know the whole 15 month old threading activity went right into the mouth (literally) of the 'almost-15-month old'...hehe...so I said, "okay, let's try something else insha'Allah, just in case after a few days the yarn is still of no interest and the Cheerios continue to find their way into the mouth of the 'almost-15-month old'" (smile).  Then Hajj came back into my mind and I decided to do an activity that 15 months old can do and is related to Hajj insha'Allah and children who are almost 15 months old can do too insha'Allah.

This activity is for developing the pincer grasp insha'Allah. Again, that is important for children to practice because it will be needed for writing skills that will develop later insha'Allah. The pincer grasp is something that Allah Created the human being with. These types of activities only serve to give the child practice in developing it so that they have ample opportunities to work on refining this important skill insha'Allah.  You can read more about the pincer grasp here insha'Allah.

Here is the activity insha'Allah:

The clothes pins have little felt Ka'abas on them
(The first thing I was asked by the first person who saw them was, "What is that supposed to be?" *sigh*...well, insha'Allah if you do this activity perhaps your Ka'abas will be far better than mine...hehe)

A close up view of how they look when the child begins clipping them onto the box insha'Allah

The box the child uses for the activity is also where the pieces are stored insha'Allah

I painted (with a non-toxic black marker) one of the clothes-pins black to show how that would look but for ours I will not do so because for many 12-15 month old children what is in the hand must, by necessity, go into the mouth. If your child does not do that then I must admit the clothes-pin does look nice painted black masha'Allah.

For the box used, do not decorate it as you do not want decorations or varying colours competing for the child's attention while doing the activity insha'Allah. Also, as I learned this morning when doing this activity, glue the Ka'aba on the clothes pin higher up than what I did. This way the child can see the bottom of the clothes pin as he/she is attempting to clip it to the box insha'Allah.

Enjoy insha'Allah!

Hajj Activity: Introduction to Addition & Subtraction

Assalamu alaikum,

Recently, a few sisters asked to see more posts using the Montessori Method insha'Allah. Alhamdulillah, in this post, I've given a simple activity that is used in Montessori classrooms for children who are 6 to 9 years old, but it is easily modified for children as young as 3 (and as old as 5) insha'Allah. The activity in this post is for children 3 to 5 years old insha'Allah.

This is an introdcution to the concept of addition and subtraction using the familar concpet of making tawaf around the Ka'aba insha'Allah. After the activity, I've also included some books that you may find helpful if your desire is to impliment Montessori in your home. I find that this method of education greatly lends itself to homeschooling masha'Allah.

In this activity, children use a spinner that has either 1-4,1-6 or 1-8 (depending on thier age and knowledge of numbers), to explore the concepts of Addition and Subtraction insha'Allah. You can download a 1-4 spinner here and a 1-8 spinner here insha'Allah.

The child spins the spinner and whatever number it lands on, they add that number of hujjaj to the picture of the Ka'aba. They spin again and add (or subtract - depending on what concept you are covering/teaching) that amount of hujjaj to join (or leave) those  hujjaj that are currently making tawaf around the Ka'aba insha'Allah.

This is the activity

A close-up view of the activity

When the student spins the spinner the first time (and after adding the hujjaj to the picture), he/she writes that number in the first box (in the first column) on the Addition (or subtraction) Chart. The child then spins again to see how many more hujjaj enter the Haram to make their tawaf insha’Allah. The student writes that number on the “Addition (or Subtraction) chart in the third box in the third column insha’Allah. The student then looks at the picture and counts to see how many hujjaj are making tawaf around the ka’aba in total (all together). He/she then writes that number in the fifth box (in the fifth column). The activity continues this way until the student completes the chart insha'Allah.

The Addition Chart (with a sample of what it would look like when the child fills it out insha'Allah)

This is a simple activity that is used to introduce, teach and reinforce the concept of adding and subtracting. It can be played individually or with two people insha'Allah. You can laminate this activity (if being used in a classroom for example) or leave it as is insha'Allah.

If you want to explore how to use the Montessori Method in your homeschool insha'Allah, you might find these books helpful insha'Allah: Montessori From the Start and Teach Me To Do It Myself.  Check your local library to see if they have them but there may be a long waiting list for them.

Enjoy insha'Allah!

Ka'aba Sequencing Activity

Assalamu alaikum,

Well now that we've gotten started on ideas for Hajj, my little grey cells are working (smile). This is a Ka'aba sequencing game. Very simple to put together insha'Allah. Just cut out all of the pictures of the Ka'aba, mount them on cardstock for durability insha'Allah, laminate (if possible) insha'Allah and then invite your child to put the cards in order from largest to smallest or vice versa (i.e. smallest to largest).

The benefits of sequencing activities are many:
  1. They help children remember the steps involved/used in a  process.
  2. They help children begin to understand that things have a logical order.
  3. The children begin to understand the concept of first, next, last, etc.
  4. The activity can also be used to teach the concept of ordinal numbers (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) insha'Allah.

Here is the file you will need insha'Allah: Ka'aba Sequencing Activity (The activity has been removed until a person of knowledge can be asked about it. This is to ensure that children do not become confused and think there is more than one ka'aba...jazakallaahu khayr to the individual who posed this question).

Hajj Game for Preschool and Kindergarten

Assalamu alaikum,

Insha'Allah, Hajj is near. This is a wonderful time to begin teaching children about this amazing journey insha'Allah. I did not actually have it in mind to post anything about Hajj but as I was searching for another file, I came across this game I designed last year alhamdulillah. This game, I'm Learning About Hajj,  is designed to teach children, ages 3 to 5 years old, about the rites of Hajj in a simplified, yet accurate, manner insha'Allah. The game lends itself to two ways of playing: A memory game and a matching game insha'Allah (it is very similar to the Allah Created Colours Game). I've used real pictures in this game as much as possible due to the subject matter and some of the pictures have humans in them but the facial features are not visable insha'Allah.

I am not able to post pictures of the game but insha'Allah if anyone makes the game, and you take pictures insha'Allah, I will be happy to add your pictures to this post insha'Allah. *Please take care not to include any people (with facial features) in the picture(s) insha'Allah - jazakum Allahu khayran.

Here are the files for the game insha'Allah:

If time permits, biithnillah, I'll be adding more Hajj games/crafts/activities in the coming weeks.

Enjoy insha'Allah!
