Ramadan Activity # 3: Phases of the Moon

Assalamu alaikum,

It's been a busy few days here so this post will be short. Insha'Allah, over the weekend I'll have more time and then we'll begin again next week with posting crafts, activities and recipes for Ramadan insha'Allah. So stay tunned (what does that mean anyway?...lol).

Lately, I've been trying to think of ways we can teach our little ones about the Phases of the Moon and explain that this is how Allah has given us the knowledge to know when we begin our fasting insha'Allah. I was googling (is that a word?) and this is what I found:

This Phases of the moon Craft is for children 24 - 48 months old (i..e 2-4 years old) insha'Allah and they actually give ideas for children up to 8 years old. Along with the Phases of the Moon activity you can use this worksheet to help your child keep track of the phases of the moon during Ramadan insha'Allah. It's a handy print out that you can put on the fridge. You can cut out the templates that are found here and each night before your child goes to bed, invite him/her to paste which phase the moon is in on that particular night insha'Allah.

Two year olds love learning and using "big" words so you can extend the activity with them by teaching them what each phase of the moon is called. You can read about the names and descriptions of the phases of the moon here insha'Allah. And this site is really neat! It actually tells (and shows) which phase the moon is in each night. They also give lots of other interesting information about the moon that a 2 year old wouldn't be interested in but I personally found it terribly interesting (smile).

I think that I'll come back and post a craft activity to compliment this one insha'Allah. An idea is forming in my head...

Off to the craft table insha'Allah!

  2. Waalaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

    Dear sister Umm Nassim,

We delayed posting this comment because the site has music. A French speaking sister whom we know emailed the webmaster regarding the ruling on music in Islam. I was trying to wait to hear back that the music had been removed insha'Allah.

If it hasn't dear sisters, please turn your speakers down when using this site insha'Allah.

Jazakillahu khayr dear sister Umm Nassim for sharing this activity! We appreciate it.

  3. Al hamdulilah , even though the site is in french, if you click on the link for the pdf, you can make a lunar cycle craft with your kids for Ramadan, maa shaa Allah. Helpful Umm Nassim, thanks! I did not hear any music when I went on the site.
Also, if you use gmail, blogger or use the google home page (igoogle), you can search and add a gadget for the "current moon phase" and it shows every day on your homepage.
    Assalamou alaiikom wa rahmatullah
