Another Way to Encourage Children's Writing

What do you get when you take a box:

a few paper towel rolls,

and add a little clip art, some paint and a lots of imagination?

............ a portable toddler writing centre!

Inside, children find both regular and colour pencils, crayons, a glue stick, small envelopes, a writing pad made with scrap paper, erasers, a ruler that was made with cardboard and a fine tip marker, and stamps downloaded from Easel & Ink.

As early as 18 months, some children are able to hold markers, pencils and crayons. Thus they begin their first attempts at writing and although we may not be able to decipher the text they happily present to us, these are their first steps toward what will later develop into letters and pictures insha'Allaah.

As parents and teachers, we can help children in this process by providing crayons, pencils, markers, scratch paper, erasers, and all sorts of goodies that children love to "write" with. Keeping these accessories handy encourages children to begin to attempt writing insha'Allaah. We can also help by cheerfully acknowledging those doodles and scratches when the little ones show them to us. By acknowledging these attempts with comments such as "Masha'Allaah! What a wonderful truck you've drawn" or "That is a very neat letter C masha'Allaah!" (or whatever they have told us their writing/drawing is) we are helping children feel that what they have attempted and contributed counts and that we truly value it. And as children begin to understand that print conveys meaning, they are also beginning another incredible journey...learning how to read insha'Allaah.

This little writing centre is portable and while I say toddler writing centre, the portable part and all other aspects of it really go right up to Kindergarten. So grab a box, some paper towel rolls, some paint and imagine away! Whatever you and your children design, it will be "write" on target insha'Allaah!

Enjoy insha'Allaah!

[Cross Post]: Check It Out!: Where Do Tiger-Heron's Spend the Night

This is a cross-post from The Well Read Muslim

This book teaches about unusual birds and their habitats and behaviours. Each page presents children with subtle and appealing acrylic illustrations of each bird and its habitat. The text asks the child a question about the bird and the child lifts the flap on the opposite page to find the answer. The text rhymes and also presents children with vocabulary that they may not be accustomed to hearing. Words like: mangroves, crests, plunge, warbling and gizzard are just a few examples.

This is one aspect of the book I liked. I recently read that Jim Trelease said [paraphrasing]: "If a child never hears a word, he won't say it. If he never says it, how will he be able to read it or write it?" That is a key in literacy education - putting words in childrens' ears. And that is yet one more beauty (and advantage) of reading aloud: children are exposed to scores of words that, independently, they cannot read but can understand when heard in context or with a little explanation insha'Allaah.

In Where Does a Tiger-Heron Spend the Night? even the names of the birds are unusual and exotic sounding. Have you ever heard of a ptarmigan (pronounced tar-ma-gun)?  That aspect mixed with the appealing illustrations and fun text combine to make this book one children may love hearing read aloud...waallaahu a'lam.

The only thing I changed in the story when reading it aloud was a line of text that seemed.....a bit...ummm..morbid? The text reads, ' Why does a vulture soar high overhead ? It's sniffing the wind for the scent of the dead.'  Instead I read, 'Why does a vulture soar high overhead? It finds dinner but  doesn't get dirty with its shinny bald head.'

Overall, Where Does a Tiger-Heron Spend the Night? is a wonderful book that I hope to add to my library insha'Allaah. The next time you're at your local library, check the shelf and if you see 'Where Does a Tiger-Heron Spend the Night?' check it out insha'Allaah!

Aqeedah Activities for Preschool Children (Part 3)

The next activity for aqeedah is centered around the following sentence/phrase:

و خلق السماء التي فيها الشمس و خلق القمر و النجوم التي في السماء و خلق الناس و الجبال و الأشجار و كل شيء
{And He created the sky where the sun is. And He created the moon and the stars that are in the sky and He created mankind and the mountains and the trees and everything.}

Children listen to some of the ayaat in the Qur'aan where Allaah mentions these things. Some of the ayaat are:

See you not how Allah sets forth a parable? A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e. very high).
{Ibrahim (14): 24}

Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days, and then He rose over (Istawa) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly, and (He created) the sun, the moon, the stars subjected to His Command. Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!
{Al-Araf (7): 54}

See you not that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and Ad-Dawabb [moving (living) creatures, beasts], and many of mankind prostrate themselves to Allah. But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And whomsoever Allah disgraces, none can honour him. Verily, Allah does what He wills.
{Al-Hajj (22): 18}

And if all the trees on the earth were pens and the sea (were ink wherewith to write), with seven seas behind it to add to its (supply), yet the Words of Allah would not be exhausted. Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
{Luqman (31): 27}

The first art project for this activity was a tree collage:

And children can also make a tree card:

The front of the card
Children use a mixture of various construction paper scraps to design a tree.

Then they are given a small square of sand-paper and some crayons and invited to draw a tree on the sandpaper:

Lastly, I wrote a small poem about a tree that they can glue inside of the card (you can download the words by clicking the link below):

This Sturdy Tree

Climb up high, high with me,
Into this great big sturdy tree.
And from the top we may just see,
Butterflies, birds and even the sea.

Climb up high, high with me,
Into this great big sturdy tree.
On the earth by Allaah’s Decree,
Like everything around us that we see.

Climb up high, high with me,
Into this great big sturdy tree.
Together let us try to be
Good little Muslims, you and me.
When the ayaat of Allaah we see,
We’ll praise Allaah, you and me!

The next activity is a Montessori 3-Part Card Lesson:

All of the 3-Part cards in this set feature things mentioned in the sentence. Children match the cards in the manner demonstrated in the lesson presentation. There is a glare in the pictures that makes it a bit difficult to see what is on the cards. There a). a sky b). stars c). a sun d). mountains e). trees and f). the moon. These 3-Part cards are in Arabic and have the vowel marks (tashkeel).

This activity can even be used with children who are not yet readers. After the child has matched the cards, you can read the words on the card and ask the child to point to the picture that shows the word you just read. You then place the word card next to the picture the child indicated.

Children are then given magnets that feature some of the pictures and words that are found in the ayaat above:
These are for additional reinforcement/fun on the fridge.

The Story of Prophet Sulaiman can be read aloud to compliment this lesson insha'Allaah:

Read the story out load. Pause on page 3 in the story. There is a picture of the sky. Point this out to children and ask them who created the sky. Continue reading and stop on page 10. At this point in the story, we are told of how the Hud-hud bird relayed the news to Sulaiman of the queen Bilqees and her people who worshipped the sun. Briefly talk about this asking students why this is wrong. Ask who created the sun, can the sun create anything, what does the sun give us (i.e. heat, warmth) and point out that this is only by Allaah's Permission and Mercy. Ask if the sun can heal people when they get sick, give them clothing when they need it, provide housing, etc. Point out that there is no reason anyone should worship the sun or any other created thing.

To allow children to interact with the part of the sentence that mentions that Allaah created mankind, children can label pre-cut paper doll chains to show their families insha'Allaah.

Children cut off (subtract) or add enough dolls to show the number of the members of their families. They then glue their doll chains on the paper. Lastly, they glue the labels underneath the dolls to show the name/title of each member of their family. Depending on the number of members in the child's household, you may need to tape two pieces of construction paper together to allow space for all of the dolls and labels.

I made this chain just so children could see an example but the children's dolls do not have the labels on the chest of the doll. The labels are pasted on underneath each doll.

You can see a way to make the paper doll chains here insha'Allaah.
The titles of family members can be downloaded here insha'Allaah.

We also did a collage of stick people:

Allaah Sees Everything (Book 12)

Alhamdulillaah, here is book # 11 that compliments sister Umm Maimoonah's preschool Islaamic Studies Curriculum. The book is called, "Allaah Sees Everything".

In this book children read a rebus story ( a story that uses pictures or symbols to represent words or parts of words) about how Allaah Sees everything. They are then given two "I Spy" activties to do. There is also a chance for students to work with the Braille alphabet! There is word word and handwriting practice and more!

Here are a few sample pages:

Together We Read (March): Ana wa Akhi Activities

For the month of March, Together We Read, Ana wa Akhi

This book has been translated into English alhamdulillaah. Click here for English.

We did a few activities to go along with this delightful book.

We did an activity to introduce telling time and related that to the part of the story where both Waleed and Sa'ed tell the reader what time they wake each morning for school. Waleed also tells the reader what time he arrives at school.

In the file, there are clocks for each hour in the day. When first introducing this activity, I recommend introducing 2-3 card sets initially (as pictured above) and gradually increasing the number of cards, insha'Allaah, as the child shows understanding and eventually mastery. To do the activity, students match the cards that show only the faces of the clocks to the cards that have the clock faces with words. They then match the word cards to the clock showing that time by placing them beneath the cards showing only clock faces. They verify their work visually and if needed, they self-correct insha'Allaah.

I chose to do this activity as an adaptation of the Montessori 3- part cards but you can use these cards in different ways insha'Allaah. There are a set of cards in Arabic and a set of cards in English alhamdulillaah. I was looking for an appropriate video to show how to present the 3-part card lesson but was unable to find one but I did find this nice set of instructions that shows you how to make 3-part cards and how to teach them! I just skimmed through it but it seems very nice waallaahu a'lam.

We also did an art activity: Children make a comb and toothbrush from Popsicle sticks and construction paper.

Older children will be able to line the teeth of their combs up a bit straighter than younger toddlers. The same applies to the bristles on the toothbrush.

There are also story retelling cards for both Waleed and Sa'eed:

There are 8 cards in each file (i.e. for Waleed's version of the story and Sa'eeds version of the story) for children to retell insha'Allaah.

To use:

1). Print the cards. Mount on cardstock or cardboard for durability (optional)

2). Cut out each individual card.

3). On the floor or table, children put the cards in order according to when the event pictured happened in the story (i.e. the glass of milk represents Waleed (or Sa'eed) taking breakfast and drinking their milk - that was not the 1st thing that happened in the story so that card would be placed further down the line).

4). Children can check their work by re-reading the story insha'Allaah.

And a small worksheet for students to identify what, from the story, is not supposed to be in the row with the other objects from the story:

Both the story re-telling cards and the 'What Doesn't Belong?' activity are in the same file for each boy.

We didn't use these but here are two books about going to the dentist and how they help us take care of our teeth: book for boys and book for girls. These books may be useful when focusing on the part of the story where Sa'eed brushes his teeth.

I did not make anything new for the part of the story about getting dressed because we had activities before about this. You can see them here and here insha'Allaah.

**Time permitting I need to add the last activity which is a cut and paste comparison for children to do. Insha'Allah, I will update this post tomorrow.

If you read 'Ana wa Akhi' and did an activity (or activities) for this book we'd enjoy seeing and reading about it insha'Allaah. Please leave a comment in this post with a link directly to your Together We Read post to share insha'Allaah! We are looking forward to it!

Baby Flashcards

In an earlier post, I mentioned the developmental capabilities of infants vision

"It is believed that infants leave the womb with many of their senses not fully developed. For example, the colours infants can see best at birth are black and white. Infants vision is also not developed enough to see most things clearly unless they are about 8 to 12 inches away from their eyes".

Masha'Allaah, Smart Ark.com has some very cute black and white flashcards for baby that you can download for free.

These would be nice to laminate and during babies quiet focus time, present them to baby one at a time allowing him/her to focus on them for as long as they show interest. For infants who are able to grasp objects, if the cards are laminated, and the corners are rounded, you can place the card in the infants hand and allow him/her to look at the card as long as he/she wishes. For babies who are not yet mobile and cannot grasp objects, you can prop the card up on an object that is directly in front of baby and allow him/her to focus on it insha'Allaah. In all case, parental supervision is advised.

You can download the cards here insha'Allaah.

Together We Read (March Book Selection)

The book selection for Together We Read (March 2011) will be

This is a fun story about two brothers: Waleed (the five year old) and Sa'ed (the three year old). Sa'ed, in an attempt to imitate his older brother, does all of the things Waleed does as he gets ready for school. Sa'ed, being younger, doesn't quite accomplish his goals in the same manner. Waleed gets off to school with no problem alhamdulillaah but Sa'ed doesn't make it off to school as he planned.....he makes it off to sleep! A fun story that is suitable for infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten aged children, Ana wa Akhi will be the book read for Together We Read this month insha'Allaah.

The book is in Arabic but alhamdulillaah I found that the book is translated into English. If you'd like to join us and read Ana wa Akhi, you can download the Arabic version and the English translation here or by clicking on the book title above insha'Allaah.

Activity ideas to compliment this book will be posted March 15, 2011 insha'Allaah. I will do my best to post both Arabic and English activities insha'Allaah.

Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyah Pre-School Lesson Plan

This is a lesson plan example for Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyah based on the Kindergarten Islamic Studies Curriculum from this post.

I have taken four of the strands from this curriculum and designed a few activities based on them to give an example how one may use this curriculum in pre-school or kindergarten insha'Allaah. The lesson plan is designed to be used by those who utilize learning centres in the classrooms or home.

The lesson plan includes a simple circle time activity to introduce the concept of Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyah to young children. Also included is an activity for children to complete using the Qur'aan. There are science activities, math activities and a few suggested extensions for the lesson.

For additional information about establishing and maintaining literacy work stations in your classroom (or home), this book may be a helpful resource: Literacy Work Stations: Making Centers Work

Here are a few samples of the activities from the lesson plan:
This worksheet is for the children to use when discussing ways we know that Allaah exists

These cards are for the phonics activity in the lesson plan
*For those who have already downloaded the phonics cards, I changed the picture on the X-ray card. You can download the new card by itself below insha'Allaah. I feel this one is more appropriate.*

Aqeedah Activities for Preschool Children (Part 2)

These activities are extensions to the Islamic studies curriculum of Saudi Arabia. Again, they have been adjusted for toddlers and preschoolers.

The aspect of tawheed covered is that Allaah is the only Creator. This sentence/phrase is the centre of the activities: الله هُوَ آلَّذِي خَلَقَ آلأَرْضَ آلَّتِي نَمْشِي عَلَيْهَا (Allaah is the one who created the earth that we walk on).

After a brief discussion invite children to follow the footsteps on the floor using alternating feet (i.e. right then left, right then left...). This activity is intended to provide practice with gross motor skills and practice balancing alternately on one foot.

As the walk progresses, remind the children that what we are walking on is the Earth that Allaah created.

The feet wind around the room in an alternating fashion, right foot then left, until the construction paper feet come to an end and children are invited to jump to the last two feet that are side by side.
Afterward, give children two worksheets to a). work on right and left direction skills and b). practice fine motor skills. This worksheet also fits in the math curriculum due to the sorting aspect.

The completed work of a child
Blank worksheet
This worksheet mentions the hadith about the manners of entering the masaajid as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari. Children are then invited to sort right and left footprints into the right and left hand columns.

I also made a mat that was placed on the floor in the area where shoes are put on. Children are invited to step on the mat and match their feet to the footprints as they are reminded which is the right foot and which is the left.

The sheet is laminated and then it was taped to the floor in front of the shoe area.

The next worksheet gives children practice with fine motor skills (i.e. pencil grip) and tracing a vertical line and as they progress, a meandering line. Children use a crayon or marker to trace over the red line that directs each foot to the picture of the earth.

A tracing worksheet for children whose fine motor skills are in the beginning developing stages

A tracing worksheet for children with more developed fine motor skills.

Some families are studying homes and what is found inside of them. As I was going through some files, I came across this and thought perhaps you could use it insha'Allaah.

If you'd like, I can make cards or a memory game to go along with this poster insha'Allaah. Please leave a comment if you would like for me to do that insha'Allaah. If you would like tashkeel on the cards please also mention that too insha'Allaah.

Let's Learn About The Qur'aan (Book 10)

Alhamdulillaah, here is book ten that compliments sister Umm Maimoonah's Islamic Studies Curriculum. The book is late and for this please accept my apologies. This book is entitled, "Let's Learn About The Qur'aan".
Given the subject matter of this book, it is not as light as the others. This book is intended to be taught by teacher and/or parent, not to be studied independently by the child. There are activities for children to complete that assess their comprehension of the material and a colouring activity as well. There is also a sample of what the tafsir of a surah looks like. Children also learn about different aspects and facts about the Qur'aan as well as what manners we should have when reciting the Qur'aan and more.

Here is a sample page:
